Govt. College Of Engineering & Ceramic Technology is the oldest institute for imparting technical education in Ceramic Science and Engineering, in the Eastern Part of India and the only institute offering a full fledged Undergraduate and Postgraduate course in Ceramic Technology in the state of West Bengal. The Institute has collaborated with reputed institutions at national and international level for postgraduate, project and Ph. D programmes like the Petronus University (Malaysia), Northern University (Saudi Arabia), Curtin University (Australia), Jadavpur University, Calcutta University, etc. It is an autonomous institution under MAKAUT and NAAC accredited A Grade college.

The Department of Ceramic Engineering at Calcutta University is part of the Department of Chemical Technology, located at the Rajabazar Science College campus. It offers both undergraduate (B.Tech) and postgraduate (M.Tech) programs in Ceramic Engineering. The B.Tech program is a 4-year full-time course, while the M.Tech program is a 2-year full-time course.

The institution was establshed to to cater the needs of Rourkela Steel Plant along with other industries of the State. It is the one of the leading institutions in Eastern India imparting Diploma Engineering in Chemical and Metallurgical branches. The institute got another feather on its cap by introducing Ceramic Technology in the year 1995 for the first time in Eastern India.
